I recently discovered that the number of people travelling with siblu and booking ferries through us was lower in 2008 than in 2007.

This is surprising, because booking a ferry though siblu is actually the cheapest way to pay for your ferry crossing.

The drop in ferry bookings could mean a couple of things: our customers are booking directly with ferry providers, or they are choosing others forms of transport, most likely flights.

If you are going on a siblu holiday and you book a crossing directly the ferry provider, you are probably paying more than you need to.

If you are travelling with a low cost airline then don’t forget to add up the total cost of your journey: the tickets, taxes, baggage charges and car hire. For families especially, a ferry booked through siblu could be the cheapest option.

Here’s some interesting research from flight portal Skyscanner about the cost of flying and hiring a car, compared to taking your own car and the ferry. In a nutshell, the conclusion says that couples should fly but families will find it cheaper on the ferry.

I would add to that: the research looks at top line costs but doesn’t take into account many of the extra costs for families travelling with young children, especially babies. There are some great low-cost deals for flights, but the extras soon stack up for luggage, buying food at the airport, booking baby seats and so on.

I’m firmly behind the ‘’ferries for families’ banner!

The ferries, worth £285m and due to launch in 2010 and 2011, have been ordered because of the increase in demand for driving holidays in France. P&O told the Daily Telegraph that families are fed up with the hassle of airport travel and so ferry business is increasing.

The new ferries will take 3,000 more cars per day and will maximise fuel efficiency for greener running. Each will weigh 49,000 gross tonnes and at 210 metres in length, will be the largest ships capable of fitting into facilities in the Channel ports.
