Our Domaine de Litteau holiday parc in Calvados, Normandy, has been given the green light for extensive improvements following the award of €1,5million from regional development councils in France.

The money will accelerate an ambitious development plan for the parc, which will include a five-fold increase in holiday home pitches, to more than 500.

We are planning to improve Domaine de Litteau’s facilities to the highest standard of four-stars and to accommodate up to 2,000 people, making the parc an important centre for tourism in the region of Calvados.

New developments will include a covered swimming complex, tennis courts, sauna and steam room, a multi-sports pitch and gym.

Domaine de Litteau will become one of France’s most environmentally friendly holiday parcs, with rigorous energy conservation and tree management plans. We have already completed a reed-bed sewage treatment pond to naturally purify waste from the parc.

We have invested heavily since acquiring Domaine de Litteau in 2007, with upgrades to facilities including a semi-permanent cover for the swimming pool, a new aquatic area for toddlers, developments to the bar, grocery store and takeaway, and the creation of 75 new mobile home pitches.

Around 100 families, approx 40% from the UK, have already bought their own holiday homes at Domaine de Litteau, tempted by the beauty of the surrounding region and proximity to the ferry port at Caen.

Domaine de Litteau general manager Jef Soucy says that ultimately, the equivalent of 50 new full time jobs will be created following this investment, with 17 new jobs already introduced since siblu took over the parc.

For many, Normandy will forever be linked to events from World War II, and there are poignant reminders throughout the region. But a heavy history shouldn’t take away from Normandy as a fascinating holiday destination, with golden prairies and wooded valleys, hidden fishing ports and 600km of coastline.

From the ultra-modern Le Tréport to the Mont-Saint-Michel, the Normandy coast exhibits an astonishing variety of landscapes.

Calvados
The sunny skies look down on Domaine de Litteau siblu parc, which is located in Calvados, in Basse Normandie (lower Normany). Calvados is know as the ‘milk-cart capital’ of France, and it’s a beautiful, rural region, famous for its milk, cream and cheeses, apple orchards and fishing ports, such as Port-en-Bessin, with its charming fish market.

And when in Rome… try the apple brandy that carries the region’s name, or enjoy a glass of refreshing cider. Pommeau is Normandy’s own ‘aperitif’ and is made from a mix of cider and calvados using time honoured recipes.

Angling and abbeys
Slightly further south are the gorges of the River Orne, in an area known as ‘Suisse Normande’, a must visit for lovers of mountain sports and fly fishing. Anglers will also enjoy the Etangs (ponds) of Planquery, which are home to giant trout.

The absolute must see of this part of France is Mont Saint Michel, a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the archangel St Michael, linked by a causeway to the coast of Normandy. Enjoy these stunning pictures of Mont St Michel from the photo-sharing website Flickr.

Normandy history
But of course, Normandy is know for its incredible history. Visit Grandcamp, Port-en-Bessin and Arromanches and the D-Day landing beach of Omaha, which offer reminders of World War II, as well as being outstanding locations for family visits. There’s a 27-hole golf course at Omaha beach, with reduced green fees and savings on coaching courses available to those staying at Domaine de Litteau.

Bayeux’s American war cemetery is a sombre memorial to the past, immaculately maintained. The medieval town boasts an incredible 11th century cathedral and the famous tapestry, which depicts William the Duke of Normandy conquering England. Bayeux is also home to a large market selling regional produce, which takes place a couple of days each week.

Arromanches is a beautiful seafront town that played a huge part in the D-day landings as an artificial port, remnants of which are still visible. The 360o cinema perched on the cliffs above Arromanches depicts Normandy as it is now and was during the war.

For those who want to delve deeper into Normandy’s past there are many tours based on famous events, including D-Day, the Battle of Normandy, and from the story of Easy Company, highlighted in the Band of Brothers books and TV programme.

Is there more you can add? Don’t hesitate to leave a comment.

Here are three ideas for great May holidays with siblu, with prices from just £305 for the family, including Dover to Calais ferries.

Explore the Vendée with a GPS
Le Bois Masson in the Vendée is hiring out global positioning satellite (GPS) systems and audio tours as an exciting way for families to explore the nearby Pays de Monts forest and salt marches. The guides help children to find and identify animal tracks and can be hired for as little as €9 for the full day. A seven-night holiday starts from just £479 from 24 May and includes a £70 saving on bookings made before 31 March. Dover to Calais return ferries are included.

Pony school in Calvados
Domaine de Litteau in Calvados, Normandy, is launching a pony school for families. Children can book rides through the Cerisy Forest or take part in half-day horse-care lessons. Prices start from just €12 for supervised rides and €35 for the course, which is run by local instructors. A seven-night family stay with Dover to Calais ferries starts from just £305, departing 12 May, including a £32 saving on breaks booked before 31 March.

Science and nature at the 3D movies
Futuroscope, a giant theme parc near to Poitiers, is packed with immersive cinemas that show awe-inspiring films which make science and nature exciting. New in 2009 are ‘Cosmic Collisions’, shown on a dome-shaped cinema screen where images of the crashes shaping our universe appear all around the viewer, and Fly Me To The Moon, a giant 3D film about three flies who space-hop on to the legendary Apollo 11 moon flight.

Futuroscope is a great day-trip for families staying at Les Charmettes in Charente Maritime, where seven-night breaks start from just £329, departing 23 May, and including a £115 saving for bookings made before 31 March. Dover to Calais ferries are included.

Just in time to catch the wave of pride as Europe’s golfers humble the Americans in yet another Ryder Cup (or will I be eating humble pie on Monday) our parc Domaine de Litteau has teamed up with Omaha Beach Club, one of the best golf courses in France, to tee off October with great big savings on their green fees.

Our customers can challenge themselves over three courses of the famous Club, which mixes outstanding sea views with striking age-old scenery, glimpses of the ancient Bayeux Cathedral and testing water hazards. The offer cuts green fees from €55 to just €31.50 per person and with week long holidays from as little as £180, that’s great value.

I have actually hacked my way around 18 holes of the course and it is great fun, provided you’re prepared to lose lots of balls (although that could be attributed to my playing style). There are three 9-hole courses, themed around the Sea, Ponds and Hedgerows. The views on many of the holes really are outstanding, with glimpses of the Channel, the D-Day beaches and even the Bayeux Cathedral.

Combine the Sea and Hedgerow courses and you have a Scottish style links course, whereas the Pond holes features lots of water (hence the name) and hills. Amateurs, like me, are probably best to avoid this stretch if they want their holiday to stay relaxed.

A colleague also pointed out that a week in France is a great chance to learn golf and there are a variety of courses available at Omaha, staring from just 220 Euros for 10 hours over five days.

Brittany, the Vendee and Loire Valley are awash with fantastic courses, so why not tell us about the best, and worst of those.
