There is the cote sauvage where the ocean rollers of several meters high at times stretch for miles and are backed by the dunes and pine forest. Followed by the Bonne Anse bay at La Palmyre which is fabulous for sailing, windsurfers and kite surfers alike. This continues to the big beach of the "grand cote" where you can do all of these things or just dip in to cool off after lazing on the beach with a spectacular view of the Courdouan light house. Then follows a quick succession of relatively protected bays through St.Palais sur mer, Vaux sur mer, Pontaillac and into Royan. You are just spoilt for choice here, and I haven't mentioned the island of oléron and its fab beaches. Although I would not recommend the island in the height of the summer, too busy to get across the bridge. I am biased though because I did live there for 6 years!
